New beginnings

The school building has come to life as students return for schedules, band and sports teams practice, teachers set up their rooms, the IT department installs and upgrades our technology and the maintenance department works their magic to ensure that students are greeted with a sparkling, freshly painted learning environment.    The guidance staff is looking forward to this new year.

An important piece of parental/teacher communication is the IParent portal.   If you do not have an account, please email Mr. Squatrito at squatriton@bw.k12.ri.us.   I encourage you to set this up as soon as possible.

Again, we are excited about a great 2014-2015 school year.

Career Fair For Our 9th Graders

Last week, the guidance department hosted a introduction to careers for our 9th grade students.   Students had previously completed a interest survey of possible careers.   Based upon the student interest, Mt. Hope welcomed a Forensic Scientist, Nurse Practitioner, Mechanical Engineer, Psychology, Police Office, Chief Information Officer, Actor/Musician and a Sports Reporter.   The 9th graders learned about the career and the variety of pathways that these professionals took to reach their current positions.

The guidance department looks forward to hosting these types of events in the future so that our students can learn about the wonderful world of work and careers that are available to them.    I read the other night that 4 out of 7 jobs that currently exist DID not exist a few years ago.   It is our hope that sparking student interest will not only allow students to learn what is out there, but to inspire them to imagine and invent jobs in our rapidly changing world.

It is a busy time in the halls of Mt. Hope

The Mt. Hope community is experiencing an exciting transition time.   Our seniors are practicing for this Saturday's graduation.   While the seniors are preparing to make their exit from our school, today we are welcoming in the incoming 9th graders from Kickemuit Middle School.   We want to introduce them to the our school and all that is great about Mt. Hope.

Our incoming 9th graders met with student leaders from our wide variety of clubs and sports.   They participated in a question and answer panel led by our current 9th graders who gave good advice.  Out of the mouths of our current 9th graders came the following words of wisdom:
1) Join something.  It is a good way to make friends and it keeps you focused on school work.
2) I have had to learn not to procrastinate.   I can't really do my homework in school anymore, so make sure you do it at home.
3) If you get lost, ask a teacher where to go.
4) As soon as you realize you aren't getting it, ask the teacher for help.   They'll stay after and help you.
